Recruitment Promised Us Smarter Hiring. So Why Does It Feel Worse?

There was a promise made when AI entered recruitment. Faster hiring. Better matches. Less bias. A process that finally worked for everyone, businesses who needed the right person, and candidates who deserved a fair shot.
It was a compelling promise. And a lot of people believed it. So why, in 2026, does the hiring experience feel worse than ever?

The Numbers Behind the Frustration
This isn't just a feeling. The data is catching up with what people have quietly known for a while.
Over half of jobseekers, 53%, now believe they have been rejected by AI without a single human ever looking at their CV. Not screened. Not considered. Filtered out by an algorithm before anyone with eyes and judgement even got involved.
And it's changing behaviour. 40% of candidates are abandoning applications entirely when they find out AI is being used in early screening. Not because they aren't qualified. Because they've stopped believing the process is fair.
On the employer side, the picture isn't much better. 83% of recruiters now use AI in hiring but 35% admit it has led to missed talent, and 27% say strong candidates are being filtered out before they ever reach an interview.
So we have a system that is simultaneously rejecting people unfairly and failing to find the right hires for businesses.
That is not smarter hiring. That is a faster version of the same broken process.
What Went Wrong
Here's the honest answer: AI didn't break recruitment. Recruitment was already broken. AI just accelerated it.
The problems were always there, ghosting, impersonal processes, CVs judged in six seconds, candidates treated as interchangeable, businesses sold warm bodies instead of right fits. AI didn't create those problems. It inherited them, scaled them up, and made them harder to challenge because now there's an algorithm to hide behind.
As one recruitment CEO put it recently: "AI is being used on top of a process that was already broken. Candidates want a better way to get seen and companies want a better way to find the right people. That's not going to come from layering AI on top of a broken process, it's going to come from building a better one."
This sentence is worth reading twice.
The Human Cost Nobody Talks About
Behind every filtered-out CV is a person who spent hours on an application. Who tailored their cover letter. Who researched the company. Who genuinely wanted that role.
And behind every bad hire is a business that lost time, money, and team morale, not because they hired carelessly, but because the process they trusted let them down.
Recruitment has real consequences. For the person who doesn't get the call back. For the team who inherits the wrong hire. For the manager who has to start again six months later.
These aren't statistics. They're Monday mornings.
What Actually Works
The candidates who are getting through right now, the ones getting interviews, getting offers, aren't necessarily the most qualified. They're the ones who have figured out how to game the system. AI-optimised CVs packed with keywords. Applications built to beat the bots, not to reflect the person.
And ironically, 81% of recruiters say CVs have become more standardised and less distinctive as a result. Everyone looks the same. Nobody stands out. The very tool designed to find the best people is making it harder to tell candidates apart.
Meanwhile, the businesses who are hiring well are the ones who haven't outsourced their judgement entirely to technology. Who still ask real questions. Who still have conversations. Who understand that a great hire isn't a keyword match, it's a person who fits the role, the team, and the culture.
It takes time. It takes genuine interest. It takes someone who refuses to treat the process as a numbers game.
Where This Leaves Us
We are not anti-technology at Nova Express Recruit. Tools that save time, reduce admin, and surface the right information have a place in any good process.
But technology should support human judgement, not replace it. The moment a person becomes a data point to be filtered rather than a human to be understood, something important has been lost.
Recruitment is still, fundamentally, about people. A business trusting someone new enough to give them a key to the door. A person trusting a company enough to give them their time, their energy, their working life.
That deserves more than an algorithm.
At Nova Express Recruit, we refuse to reduce anyone to a CV, a keyword, or a number on a spreadsheet. If you're a business who wants to hire well or a candidate who wants to be seen properly — get in touch. We speak with a limited number of new businesses each month, because doing this properly takes time.
